Review - Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe #1

I have been waiting for this issue to come out since I first heard about it.  I mean, Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe, just has such a great ring to it.  Others have done it, most notably Punisher, but now we are talking about a character that is already unstable, and for all intents and purposes, he cannot be stopped.

This issue starts out like most alternate universe stories with the Watcher. He gives his spiel then we move right into the carnage.  Deadpool has already killed two heroes and stolen something rather important, but he is far from done.  Next up the Watcher brings us back to the beginning of this Deadpool story.  After unsuccessful attempts by Professor Xavier to help Deadpool with his problems Xavier and his X-Men decide, it is time for some professional help. As it turns out this help is not what anyone was expecting.  I do not want to spoil anything but I will say Deadpool’s crazy tendencies are taken to a new level.
Cullen Bunn is off to a good start with this issue.  He is taking a character that absolutely has the ability to kill everyone in the Marvel Universe, and gives him the motivation to.  Bunn seems to have a sense of what makes Deadpool such a great character.  Deadpool still has that touch of humor but also brings some great killing potential.

The art by Dalibor Talajic is good but everyone seems to have a blank stare. That works at some points in the story but at times it is a bit confused when the rest of the characters face is saying, “I’m pissed” while they just have lifeless eyes.  I also have a problem with the choice of outfit for Deadpool.  Not that it is drawn poorly or anything, it just looks awkward.  That however is just a minimal thing for me and did not hamper my enjoyment of the issue.

Overall, I found this to be a strong start to this limited series.  We get to see a transformation in the issue that should set up the whole premise of this series.  You may already know what is going to happen (I mean it is right in the title, Deadpool will kill the Marvel Universe) but the journey of how he goes about it and the carnage he will leave behind will surely be worth the read.

Verdict 8/10 Starting out with a great concept helps but the writing and art have to keep it up and bring everything full circle.  With this issue being any indication, they can certainly do just that.
